To complete the online training course, participants must confirm their understanding of the course content by obtaining a score of 100% on a short multiple choice quiz. Those that do not pass the quiz can reread the course material and retest as many times as necessary. Upon successful completion, participants will receive a printable Certificate of Completion for their records. The Dues Deduction Form authorizes UBC to deduct union dues, initiation fees and any assessments as established by CUPE 2278 from your wages.
It is a mandatory requirement that every TA must complete.
You do not have to complete a Schedule B for EACH of your TA appointments in every given term, but you do have to complete a new Schedule B for each session you will be TA’ing.
Please note: the Schedule B form requires a SIGNATURE. Please do not type or write your name on the line above “Signature of Employee”.
The SOCI Grad Office collects all Schedule B forms for TA’s who have been appointed up to Sept 1st and forwards these on behalf of the TA’s to CUPE 2278. If you are appointed AFTER Sept 1st during any Winter Session, it is your responsibility to complete this form and send it to the union with a copy to the SOCI Grad Office.
As soon as you have accepted a position our office will need to setup your HR profile. Fill this out and submit it back to the SOCI Grad (firstname.lastname@example.org). Direct Deposit is mandatory for all UBC employees.
Meet with your assigned instructor to go over your duties and hours. TA’s are expected to be available for the duration of the course including final exam period, TAs must discuss periods of unavailability with course instructor. Instructor and TA should have a copy of this form, original copy with signatures must be returned to SOCI Grad office during first week of school.
SIN and Study Permit
Submit a scanned copy of your study permit to the SOCI Grad office along with your Direct Deposit form. Email it to: email@example.com
TAs are paid bi-monthly on the 15th and the 30th or 31st of each month. If you have not arranged for payroll direct deposit, your pay cheques can be picked up at Financial Services/Payroll on the 5th floor of the TEF-3 building. You will need photo ID to pick up your pay cheques. Please also submit your Payroll Direct Deposit forms to Financial Services/Payroll for payments to begin.
If there are any problems with your appointment, please inform the sociology graduate secretary immediately.
As a TA in our department, you have been assigned an office in the AnSo building. If you have not done so already, please see the sociology graduate secretary in the sociology grad office in order to find out where your office is located and to obtain a key request.
As you will be sharing office space with other TAs, please ensure that your TA office hours are posted clearly outside your office. It is a good idea to negotiate your office hours with the TAs sharing your office space so that students coming to see you have uninterrupted time with you.
If you are required to photocopy material for class, and you will be photocopying in the department copy room across from the main office, you will need to ask your instructor to supply you with their copy code. The copy code is needed in order to log onto the copy machine. Please refer to the document in your TA orientation package entitled "A Few Guidelines for Teaching Assistants" for more information about photocopying.
If you require equipment for a class, equipment can be booked from the sociology main office. Please remember to return any equipment borrowed from the mailroom promptly after class.
If your TA duties conflict with deadlines for your courses or responsibilities for other academic work, please be sure to notify your own instructor (or supervisor) and the instructor of the course you are TAing for in order to work out a solution.
