Members of the Departmental Awards Committee invite nominations for the inaugural Sociology Undergraduate Teaching Assistant Award ($500) in the Department of Sociology. Eligible nominees are undergraduate students enrolled in Sociology who have demonstrated excellence in their role as an undergraduate Teaching Assistant. Nominees must have completed a minimum of 6 credits of work as a TA for Sociology courses. We encourage faculty working with undergraduate TAs to nominate a candidate for this award: the file must include the nominator’s letter, candidate's statement of teaching philosophy, innovation, and mentoring (maximum 2 pages), record of TA duties, including name and number of courses, copies of students’ course evaluations, and support letters from 4 (maximum) students who have worked with the TA. Departmental deadline, June 15th, 2015. A three-member subcommittee composed of faculty from Sociology will adjudicate this award. We require a letter of nomination from the student’s faculty supervisor that extolls the merits of the student’s writing, research, and sociological findings. 2. Choose one activity or responsibility to focus on in your statement. This activity should showcase a time where you took on a leadership role in some manner (even something as simple as helping students understand a complex concept during your office hours).

3. Describe how you approached this activity, what informed your practice, and how you evaluated the result. Did you get any feedback from students about this activity?

4. if you did similar activities across similar courses, discuss how you adapted this activity or responsibility and why you adapted it the way you did.

5. Finally, reflect on your TA experience, what you have gained from it, and who it has prepared you for the future (either in your undergraduate degree, or for graduate school/other professional goals you may have).
